Food As Fuel

The way we accomplish anything in our day is by ENERGY.  We need energy to live. Energy fuels our body, allows our heart to pump, our lungs to breathe and our brain to think.

And if you think about it, the better our brains are fueled, the better decisions we make...and therefore, the better quality of life we can live.

Energy is life.  And food is the way our bodies get that energy.  To live, to breathe, to feel.

Here’s a brief outline of what different kinds of foods do for our body.

You can see how you can solve a lot of troubles simply by knowing what to eat and eating well.

  • Energy for every cell
  • Great energy source for the brain
  • Favorite energy source for muscles
  • Offer fiber, several vitamins, minerals, and more

  • Offers calcium that helps our muscles and tissues carry out their jobs.
  • Keeps our bones and teeth healthy and strong

  • Eat in season when possible
  • Go for a wide variety of colors.  Think: “Eating the rainbow.” When you look down at your plate, are there more than 3 colors? That’s your goal.
  • Eat at least 5 servings a day. A serving size is about ½ cup.
  • Provides fiber, vitamins, minerals, and more.

Sweets/ Desserts

  • Eating moderate amounts of sweets and desserts is common
  • Learning to include them appropriately is an important skill

  • Important for brain function, mood, memory, maintaining body temperature, digestive function, protecting muscle mass, producing hormones, skin health, healthy hair, absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K
  • One of the most misunderstood and important sources of fuel for our brain development, metabolism, and brain function. (NOTE: This area is missed by so many us!)

  • Builds and repairs body tissues (organs, muscles, hair, etc.)
  • Helps improve concentration, maintain energy levels
  • Protects tissue energy stores

Each macronutrient (Carbs, Fats, Proteins) and micronutrient (Vitamins and Minerals) are important.  They are an important source of energy for us to thrive.

A couple of notes on grains and dairy…

For grains, I suggest eating grains that are gluten-free. (No wheat, rye, or barley and sometimes oats if it’s been rolled in wheat flour.)

The reason being many of our digestive systems are so overstressed due to the fight/flight brain response that we're not able to digest gluten well at all. And then it causes more problems.  Another reason being the toxicity effect that many of us seem sensitive to due to Folic acid.

For dairy, it's interesting to note, dairy from Australia or Europe are preferred due to the nature of how the cows are treated and fed.  You can find it in Costco, HyVee, Bakers, etc. Basically anywhere. Just look on the package for where the product comes from.

As you know, it’s so important to make sure your family gets proper nutrition. If for no other reason than the health, support and function of their brain.

Afterall, our quality of life is dependent upon the quality of our decisions...which depends upon the quality of our brain ability.
